Okay, so imagine that I am a great guitarist, and I have this great riff for a song which I KNOW will be a huge hit, if I could just get the band together and record it.

Unfortunately, I live in an imaginary town where all other musicians are rubbish!

The web site would allow me to upload my guitar track (of course, it could be any instrument at all). This track is shared with other people participating on the site. They can listen to my guitar track, and if they feel inclined, they can add their drums, banjo, piano, vocals, bass etc. to my track.

As each track is added the song would grow into a more complete recording. There is nothing to stop several people adding bass tracks/vocals etc. because I'm imagining that any track added could be toggled on or off. So, if someone adds really awful vocals, then I just turn that off.

I love the idea of people being able to record with complete strangers and complement other artists ideas in ways that the person who started the song would never have imagined. I'm guessing that often the results would be dire, but every now and again some quality would shine through.

I think that this kind of site is exactly the sort of place where you would get devoted users who would come back again and again to add their music to the creations of other people. It could be a way to get your musical 'voice' heard, playing with people who you would never have had the chance to play with otherwise. Imagine if a well-known artist put a track up there, people would flock in the thousands to add their ideas to those songs.

There would need to be heaps more thought applied to this, but as always it is the kernel of the idea that I am promoting here. Any developer would have a LOT of work to get this going, but the payback (in musical terms) could be awesome.
